According to OnlineTravelReview, Turkish Airlines is set to launch service from Istanbul to the Maldives 5 days a week starting November 20, 2012. This is great news because it gives another one-stop option from North America (specifically JFK New York) to fly to the Maldives. JFK-IST is usually an easy ticket to score so it should make for very easy bookings to paradise.
The best option used to be Qatar Airways from New York to Doha to Male (Maldives), but the United Airlines – Qatar Airways relationship is due to end in a few months so that will no longer be bookable.
Another Star Alliance option, albeit quite long and hard to get, is via Singapore Airlines’ longest commercial flight in the world. The Newark – Singapore flight is 19 hours and that will connect to daily Singapore – Male service. Joann and I actually have this exact route booked next year for our birthday week. It’s a great use of our United miles (and Chase Ultimate Rewards points), and I definitely want to try Singapore’s all business class service for almost a full day. Sounds arduous but somebody’s gotta do it!
With United miles, all these options will cost 80,000 miles round trip in Coach and 120,000 miles round trip in Business.
For you oneworld flyers with American Airlines miles, the best redemption is the one-stop routing from Etihad Airways, New York – Abu Dhabi – Male.
This will cost 90k miles round trip in Coach, 135k in Business, and 180k in First!
