According to Gary from View from the Wing, Delta is offering a 100% bonus on purchased, gifted, or transferred miles through September 30. The one restriction is that the account has to be open for at least 10 days. Since this promo is going until the end of September, sign up now just in case!
This offer is great for me (or my parents, rather) because I am using their Delta miles to send them on a trip to Europe in Business class next Spring.
Dad has 113k miles; Mom has 78k miles. One Business class award to Europe is 100k. As you can see, Mom is 22k miles short. Normally, if I were to buy 22k miles straight from Delta, it would cost $770 + taxes/fees. With this 100% bonus offer, I can transfer 11k miles from Dad and they will become 22k miles in Mom’s SkyMiles account. Total price for this was $140 all in. Much better!
So now Dad has 102k miles and Mom has 100k miles. I will most likely be booking a multi-city award trip for them that looks something like JFK-LHR-MAD-JFK for 100k miles each. Some people find Delta low-award availability poor but I’ve personally never had a problem. I’ll definitely write another post about the whole trip booking process.
In the end, this promo works out perfectly for my family. 2 Business class trips to Europe, emptying out 2 Delta accounts, and the satisfaction of not having to participate in a frequent flyer program that is constantly devaluing itself (i.e. Delta Institutes Strict 72 Hour Award Change/Cancel Rule).
Is this promo good for you? Maybe not unless you’ve got an award already lined up or you need to top off your account. After all, that is the general rule of paying for miles. Don’t do it unless you’ve got an award in mind… unless of course the miles are well below 1 cent per mile!
