Alaska Airlines: Up to 40% Bonus on Purchased Miles

What’s the deal???

Through September 28, 2012, Alaska Airlines is offering up to a 40% bonus on purchased miles.

Details

As you can see in the screenshot above, the best value is purchasing at least 30,000 Mileage Plan miles.

The max miles you can purchase is 40,000 with 16,000 mile bonus, totaling 56,000 miles.

Is this a good deal?

Yes and no. It’s not a great deal unless you have a goal for the miles (as always). The final calculation is that each mile will cost you 2.11 cents.

Example 1

If you’re goal is First Class travel from North America to Asia or South Africa on Cathay Pacific, then it would be a good value. While the maximum of 56,000 won’t get you near the lofty price of 140,000 miles, if you paid the 2.11 cents per mile rate that this promo offers, the ticket would cost you ~$2954.

That’s amazing for a First Class ticket to Asia or Africa. Way too pricey for me, but if you were going to buy even a Business class fare, you’d be better off with this promo!

Example 2

On the other hand, if you were to only use these miles for domestic travel in the US, this would be a terrible deal. At 25,000 miles for a round trip award, the 2.11 CPM rate would make that ticket cost $527! Horrible.

So you see, it’s all about what you have in mind.

How do I get in on this deal?

Easy. Just click here and proceed to fill out your information.

Extra Details

Consider the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan loyalty program if you fly a variety of Delta and American, but not enough to gain status with either of them. Alaska is a very handy program in that sense that I can detail in another post.

They also have a handful of quality international partners to redeem miles on – Cathay (see above example), Air France, Korean Air, LAN, Qantas, and Emirates (later this year).

Wrap-Up

As with all opportunities to buy miles, you have to figure out if it makes sense for you with the award goals you have. What’s good for me might not be good for you! The examples above should make that pretty clear. Let me know if you have any questions or I left anything out!
