AmEx > Chase… in Terms of Generosity
As always, one of the best ways to get a free points from credit card companies is to simply ASK! In the past, this has worked with both American Express(matching bonus offers) and Chase (a few thousand good will points).
Yesterday, I figured I’d try again. There is a new offer out for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card that is about 5,000 Starpoints better than the current promo I’m enrolled in. As usual, I sent a Secure Message to the Social Media team:
Always mention that you found a better offer and supply the link if you have it. Mention that you really like their rewards program, whichever one it may be. More often than not, you’ll get a great response:
There you have it. They chose not to change me to the easier bonus offer but they gave me 5,000 Starpoints so I will come out even. Perfect!
If you get denied with AmEx, usually you can just send another brand new request (asking as if it’s your first message again) and you play roulette with the agents; hopefully you’ll get a generous one.
Compare that to my email to Chase today where I asked about travel & dining purchases made before 7/17/2011. That date is when they instated the 2x points for travel & dining on the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card. I was told that they could do nothing and to accept it… even though I have over a $50k credit line with Chase. That’s fine, but it’s a far cry from the generosity and commitment shown by AmEx!
